One decision engaged couples must make while wedding planning is whether or not they would like an engagement session. Some may be wondering “what exactly is an engagement session?” Good question! Couples often confuse “engagement sessions” with photographs of the actual proposal, or assume that they must take place within a certain time frame after getting engaged. An engagement session is actually just a portrait session, and can take place any time prior to your wedding. One of these sessions is complimentary with all of my wedding collections. But why? Below are my top four reasons for doing an engagement session with your wedding photographer.
1. Getting to Know Your Photographer
Engagement sessions are the perfect opportunity for photographers and new clients to get to know each other. Of all the reasons to do an engagement session with your wedding photographer, this is my favorite. I believe photography is more than just images; it’s a real part of your day. Not only do you deserve beautiful images, you also deserve an amazing photographic experience. One way I ensure that my brides and grooms enjoy the best photographic experience possible is by forming a relationship them. A bride and groom should connect with their photographer, trust their photographer, and be excited about the whole process with them. After all, you will likely spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than anyone else!
2. Practice Makes Perfect
Engagement sessions help couples warm up to the camera so that they are ready to rock and roll on the wedding day! Couples that feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera look genuine and joyful in their images. By the time the wedding day arrives, my clients feel more like friends than clients and that creates a safe and relaxed environment for photography!
3. Something to Look Back On
Getting engaged is an exciting chapter in a couple’s love story. Having an engagement session means you will have beautiful images to remember this time. For most couples, the last time they had professional portraits taken was their senior photos in high school. An engagement session is a great excuse to get some updated portraits with the love of your life.
4. Save-the-Dates, Reception Decor & More!
Photos from engagement sessions have multiple uses. Many couples use them for custom save-the-dates, to make their wedding “guestbook” or as part of their reception centerpieces. Not only will displaying your engagement photos add a personal touch to your wedding details, your family will love them! What grandma doesn’t like getting pictures of their grand kids, am I right?
